I’m genuinely so excited to see some of the more focussed communities blossom on this platform as they have on Reddit over the years. Which are your favourites and which do you think could succeed here?

This might be controversial, but I think the TwoX communities need space here. Don’t make them automatically appear on the front page, and hopefully their creators and moderators have the tools to keep them space but yeah, this site needs spaces like TwoXSex, TwoXChromosomes, TwoXPreppers, Beyondthebump, Mommit, Childfree, etc. I’m new here but didn’t find any of those on initial glance and like a great bar, you need women to show up and be seen/heard. Give them a safe space (see my comment on moderation tools) to transition to and I bet Lemmy would get lots of people to switch.

Also, to echo another person, we need a “master” list of communities, at least the umbrella ones. For instance /plants could be the umbrella for /botany, /trees, /gardening, etc.

Lastly, this site needs porn. Hear me out before you start judging. Nothing drives technology usage like porn. VHS and digital video are both huge because of porn driving widespread adoption. PornHub needs to spin up a server for its infinite catalog which ensures they get paid but also that minors aren’t being exploited.

Oh, feature Request request, some kind of incognito mode in the mobile apps which lets people view NSFW media without it being in their history. Also the app should disable built-in messaging options while in that mode to ensure fewer bad decisions and bad outcomes from accidental texts of disabled midget porn to various contacts. Just an idea I had.

Maybe we can skip naming the women’s communities after chromosomes this time around. TheGirlSurvivalGuide is another good subreddit to reference as far as nice women’s support content. From what I recall, that support group gained in popularity after TwoXChromosomes was made a default subreddit.

Personally, I could do without the porn. I don’t think every website needs to include porn. There are lots of other places to go for that content. So much of it features abuse of women and honestly it’s quite refreshing when I find a site that doesn’t feature it. I really hate unexpectedly coming across someone choking a woman. I wouldn’t mind it so much if the bulk of it was adults actually sharing mutual joy together, but that’s not generally how it goes and I hate to see so much suffering and exploitation normalized and spread across so many different places.

As a Transfem individual I didn’t necessarily feel excluded from TwoX, but I could see how other transwomen or AMAB transfem people might feel that way.

Edit: I’d love to see Witches V Patriarchy here too.

I’ve actually meant to ask about this. I not only agree about the porn part of the site needing to exist, but I feel like it’s important that any federated platform have really terrible parts to it. I feel like I will truly trust the platform once it has places that I’m both uninterested in going to and also find disturbing. I’m not asking for this to turn into a right wing cesspool but there are several edgy communities such as r/WatchPeopleDie that I’d like a reappearance of even if I don’t browse them.

Do you know about mastodon? It’s way bigger than lemmy and a twitter alternative, and it has developed these kinds of spaces. They have NSFW servers and “free speech extremist” ones etc. With time I see this coming to lemmy as well. Don’t forget that a couple of days ago we were just a couple of hundred people here :)
