Is this a bittorrent client or for a tracker web site?

I have to do a poll, but it will most likely be that way.

Regarding the politics, I feel you, and I agree everything is political and such, but I think there’s a middle point where most people can agree it’s bearable, and other times not. For example, I really hate seeing liberal memes, and I’m sure liberals hate seeing Leninists memes here but there are gray places when it’s hard. I think I will leave it like this for now.

It would be nice to do a poll, though, and see what people think.

I was thinking the same regarding comics, since a lot of people post them here and they are not memes, may be a good idea to do the same with everything that’s not a meme.

I was also thinking the same as @morrowind@lemmy.ml and maybe having separate communities for political memes may be a good idea, and leave /c/memes just for plain humour, although this can be harder to do since a lot of stuff ends up having politics in one way or another.

I don’t know if I should take this decision by myself just because I’m a mod, though, so maybe hearing out what the rest have to say is a nice idea.

If it were up to me I’d go with Rust because it’s fast and nice, but it’s going to be harder to do since not many people know it, but if you think you can keep the project alive enough until you get help it would be ideal.

I think this is something super useful because what happens to me is that there’s not a really good way to organize images unless you keep two copies of the same file. Let’s say I have a meme about chess that also involves politics, should I store in my “Politics” folder or in my “Chess” folder? With a tag based system you only add a tag which makes it appear on both places, so I wish you the best of luck.

Regarding music I wouldn’t care to use it because I’d rather have a music player that does the same that what you’re proposing but and has a music player integrated into it, which is not something you should add to this software unless you make it really bloaty, at least with e-books and images you generally have another software which just opens it and that’s it.

Also I think some level of hierarchy is needed, so that you can keep stuff within stuff. For example I could have an “Image” tag, and withing it, different tags like “Memes,” “Video Games,” and so on. At least for me, I wouldn’t want to have video memes along with image memes, for example.

Alacrity doesn’t follow my OS colour theme which is pretty shitty tbh, but it’s a really good project. uwu

Yes, I tend to read the most boring kind of books I can find, they’re fun.

Adding upper case letters to addresses would indeed increase what the “_” does, I don’t think we should add them. Your method also requires manual intervention which is just not a good idea.

It seems like it’d require such a level of research to done that would be almost impossible to do it.

Aether works like that in theory, but I think that the feature was never created.

I was a moderator of an image board once and basically they tell you that you should be lurking and if you see anything that breaks the ToC you should delete it and ban that IP if it’s too horrible. Mind you this image board wasn’t so big (it’s not super small, though) so maybe moderation in some bigger one is a bit more serious.

Not the brightest moment in my life, hehe. sighs in depression

While I totally I agree with you this community is not for this kind of stuff, /c/announcements is for Lemmy announcements, read the sidebar please.

I think having more admins from more time zones is the best solution, then e-mail verification and then having to fill out a form because it takes time to be reviewed and it takes more time from me because i have to write shit and anyway i can lie.

What methods did you use to learn during those 3 years? What were your learning (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, etc)? Did you manage to retain some of the knowledge acquired during those years? Honestly you picked a hard language to learn, 3 years learning Spanish without some proper teacher is not that much to be honest, I’ve been learning German for that amount by myself and I’m not even close to being that good honestly, so don’t feel bad about it.

the only blu rays i ever owned were ps3 gaems, they never really catch on here as dvds cos they were expensive af, but yes, fuck them

It’s all thanks to 4chan and their raids, God bless them. 🙏

lol, whos slacking what? china has a reasonable and realistic date to achieve carbon neutrality while the rest of the world isn’t even trying, this without keeping in mind that they are the factory of the world. ah, yeah, and none of the rich countries are helping shit, so you couldn’t expect third world countries to do miracles while they’re still getting fucked by anglos and europeans

If you care about aesthetics, Zorin since it is really beautiful, otherwise Mint.

u either born baby gay or baby straight gugu tataaa

It would be nice to modify the front end so that it looks better for that.

Why does it have that white yellow tone?

IMO it has quite a few native applications which is pretty rare for a distribution of its size, then you have everything flatpak has to offer and you could install any .deb, which is enough for me. Sure, you don’t get as many stuff as the AUR has but Arch is for pros anyway.

Zorin if you come from Windows, elementary if you come from Macintosh.

If there are two stacks side by side then the probability that there are a hundred pillows is 10%, which is a really small percentage for someone who claims to have a hundred pillows.

There are an approximate of 50 to 60 pillows there, not a hundred.

From this thread:

I would consider National Bolshevism as more of a right wing ideology since it is not internationalist as opposed to Marxism Leninism (where there in fact exists nationalism, for example Ho Chi Minh was one, but it is combined with internationalism). National Anarchism is simply one of the stupidest things it could exist, since anarchism is a proponent of a stateless society therefore it is contradictory to its roots; it can be considered as much anarchist as Anarcho Capitalism.

Ahh, I get your point, I think it could redirect by default to the human readable one but if one where to delete to only the ID should also work. Yeah, I understand the only title based URL part.

I disagree on being nicer, since it makes the URL larger and it does not follow the same pattern as everything else, but let’s agree on disagree on that part.

Well, that is the exact opposite of what OP thinks, since it’s not human meaningful if title is optional. Also I don’t see the reason why /post/ helps with readability more than /p/.

Yeah, that’s also an issue, and sure opt in ads are not that bad since it’s probably one or two clicks away and they’re gone, as long as it doesn’t get like the Android ecosystem where everything you download that’s not from F-droid is basically an ad hell where every part of the GUI is used to display something or pop up something when you’re using it.

I think in an ideal world, the government should have to fund this, to some degree or other, because at the end of the day the world depends on open source software, and the solution is neither to make it closed source or something inherently wrong with open source, it’s just ravaging capitalism. If governments would stop using shitty Windows and pay some money to Linux+GNOME+KDE+etc they would save some money and also give funding.

Sure, I understand that people need money, I just think it’s a patch to a bigger issue that’s not solving anything, I don’t think we should be putting advertisement in the most unimaginable of places there are, it’s just sick.

I think it’s better to keeep the /c/communityaddress part so that only with reading the URL you can know where the discussion is taking place, also posts could be displayed with /p/ following how everything else is being displayed /c/, /u/. but I agree with you. It would be much better.

Anyone else thinks that “_” in community addresses should be gone?
In my opinion the only good thing it does is to create copies of already existing communities, so basically people tend to follow one community or the other and it divides the people who could be active. If you want to create a community that's similar to one and for some reason you don't want to be a part of it, find another name, if you can't find another name, create your own instance. So if Lemmy is federating now we could have /c/worldnews, /c/world_news, and the same applies to every other instance that decides to do the same. In my opinion this only segregates people. The same applies to uppercase letters, which Reddit uses but luckily Lemmy does not, imagine how many copies of a community could be created if you use both.

This Friday, 09/29/09, el Feo, content creator of the YouTube channel La Filmoteca Maldita, was arrested for illegal distribution of copyrighted material. Zoowoman is not another piracy site, it is a platform that serves to preserve films that are almost impossible to obtain by any other means. Since those who have the rights to these films do not distribute them because it is not profitable for them, but they prefer to keep them and lose them in oblivion, before someone sees them for free. This is an outrage to culture, as El Feo says: "Cinema is ours!

Best looking and most minimalist text editor?
So I've been trying to find a text editor that's blazing fast with as little features as possible that doesn't look like it was designed in the '90s. I would like something that when I click on my files it opens almost instantly and only displays text in a notepad without any buttons tools, or just the bare minimum (like create a new file or something like that). I want this to read .txt files and that's it, if I'm working on a writing I'd use LibreOffice and if I'm writing some code I'd use Atom.

Is there an easy to use Wine GUI to install .exes?
So I'm install Manjaro for a friend and it's the first time he uses a Linux distribution, but he still needs a couple of Windows applications so I was wondering if anyone could recommend me an easy to use GUI to install .exes (not for video games, but for applications) so that he can install them without too much hassle. If not, what's the next easiest way to do it? Can you link me to some tutorial?

Help, my system is read only
Well, I was using my machine as usual, downloading some stuff in Nicotine while all of a sudden it starts throwing me permission error for the files I was downloading, it was weird so I went to my downloads folder and noticed that the folder where it was being downloaded on was protected, I tried to change it using right click, properties, and after I presses F5 all my system appeared as read only. I noticed that another folder also got read only while I was downloading it from Nicotine yesterday, I don't know if it is related. I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS.

Well, I know this may seem like something stupid, since the community over all isn't that big, but I feel it needs its own space, and if it's not active I'm okay with it, as long as its there if someone wants to participate.

***This is a [Reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/nc27fv/rescue_mission_for_scihub_and_open_science_we_are/), not my own work.*** ---- **Rescue Mission Links** * Quick start to rescuing Sci-Hub: Download 1 random torrent (100GB) from the [scimag collection](http://libgen.rs/scimag/repository_torrent/) and download it. Seed forever. * [Mission Success Tracker](https://phillm.net/libgen-stats-table.php), thanks to phillm * Contribute to open source Sci-Hub projects: [freereadorg/awesome-libgen](https://github.com/freereadorg/awesome-libgen) * Join /r/scihub to stay up to date # A Rescue Mission for Sci-Hub and Open Science Elsevier and the USDOJ have declared war against Sci-Hub and open science. The era of Sci-Hub and Alexandra standing alone in this fight must end. We have to take a stand with her. On May 7th, Sci-Hub's Alexandra Elbakyan [revealed](https://twitter.com/ringo_ring/status/1390782451140767749) that the FBI has been wiretapping her accounts for over 2 years. This news comes after Twitter [silenced the official Sci\_Hub](https://www.theverge.com/2021/1/8/22220738/twitter-sci-hub-suspended-indian-court-case) twitter account because Indian academics were organizing on it against Elsevier. Sci-Hub itself is currently frozen and has not downloaded any new articles since December 2020. This rescue mission is focused on seeding the article collection in order to prepare for a potential Sci-Hub shutdown. [Alexandra Elbakyan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandra_Elbakyan) of Sci-Hub, bookwarrior of [Library Genesis](https://libgen.fun/), [Aaron Swartz](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Swartz), and countless unnamed others have fought to free science from the grips of for-profit publishers. Today, they do it working in hiding, alone, without acknowledgment, in fear of imprisonment, and even now wiretapped by the FBI. They sacrifice everything for one vision: Open Science. Why do they do it? They do it so that humble scholars on the other side of the planet can practice medicine, create science, fight for democracy, teach, and learn. People like Alexandra Elbakyan would give up their personal freedom for that one goal: to free knowledge. For that, Elsevier Corp (RELX, market cap: 50 billion) wants to silence her, wants to see her in prison, and wants to shut Sci-Hub down. It's time we sent Elsevier and the USDOJ a clearer message about the fate of Sci-Hub and open science: we are the library, we do not get silenced, we do not shut down our computers, and we are many. # Rescue Mission for Sci-Hub If you have been following the story, then you know that this is not our first rescue mission. * [We protected the Library Genesis book collection](https://www.vice.com/en/article/pa7jxb/archivists-are-trying-to-make-sure-a-pirate-bay-of-science-never-goes-down) * [We unlocked over 5,000 COVID-19 research articles](https://www.vice.com/en/article/z3b3v5/archivists-are-bypassing-paywalls-to-share-studies-about-coronaviruses) * [We successfully petitioned publishers to unlock their COVID-19 paywalls](https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/comments/feo68j/humanity_wins_our_fight_to_unlock_32544_covid19/) * bookwarrior, the *founder* of Library Genesis, took his library [onto the de-centralized and un-censorable IPFS web](http://libgen.fun/) * Next? Make Sci-Hub un-censorable too. # Rescue Target A handful of Library Genesis seeders are currently seeding the Sci-Hub torrents. There are [850 scihub torrents](http://libgen.rs/scimag/repository_torrent/), each containing 100,000 scientific articles, to a total of 85 million scientific articles: 77TB. This is the complete Sci-Hub database. We need to protect this. # Rescue Team **Wave 1:** We need **85 datahoarders** to store and seed 1TB of articles each, 10 torrents in total. Download 10 [random](https://www.random.org/integers/?num=10&min=100&max=850&col=1&base=10&format=html&rnd=new) torrents from the [scimag collection](http://libgen.rs/scimag/repository_torrent/), then load the torrents onto your client and seed for as long as you can. The articles are coded by DOI and in zip files. **Wave 2:** Reach out to **10 good friends** to ask them to grab just 1 random torrent (100GB). That's 8,500 seeders. We are now the library. **Final Wave:** Development for an open source Sci-Hub. [freereadorg/awesome-libgen](https://github.com/freereadorg/awesome-libgen) is a collection of open source achievements based on the Sci-Hub and Library Genesis databases. Open source de-centralization of Sci-Hub is the ultimate goal here, and this begins with the data, but it is going to take years of developer sweat to carry these libraries into the future. Heartfelt thanks to the /r/datahoarder and /r/seedboxes communities, [seedbox.io](https://seedbox.io/) and [NFOrce](https://www.nforce.com/) for your support for previous missions and your love for science.

List of libre software I would love to exist
##### Disclaimer: I know that being a developer is hard, I'm not trying to say that people should start doing these ideas to please my desires. I just thought it was fun to have a list of ideas that could improve the libre software community and these are some of them that I would really love to see. If you have some other Ideas contribute as well, and if you are a developer and you are looking for something to do but don't know what, you may gain some inspiration from here. ---- **Projects that do not exist:** - Libre and privacy respecting alternative to DeepL. *Details: I know there are already some libre translators, but I will not stop using DeepL until there's something as good as it.* - Libre and privacy respecting alternative to [Genius](https://genius.com/). *Details: It's a website where users create community based lyrics for their favourite artists and can create annotations and add metadata.* - ~~Libre and privacy respecting alternative to Goodreads. *Details: It's a website where you keep a log of what you've read, what you want to read and what you are reading, you can also rate books.*~~ [Here](https://github.com/mouse-reeve/bookwyrm) is an alternative. - Libre and privacy respecting alternative to Grammarly. *Details: It's a set of applications or add-ons that help you with typos and it will improve your text.* - Libre and privacy respecting alternative to Letterboxd. *Details: t's a website where you keep a log of what you've seen and what you want to see, you can also rate movies and TV shows.* - Libre and privacy respecting alternative to Pixabay. *Details: It's a website where you can get images to use without copyright restrictions. I mention the aesthetic parts because I want to be able to recommend this to people who wouldn't use it otherwise if it looks like something really "primitive".* - Revive [waifu2x](https://github.com/nagadomi/waifu2x/) as a serious project. *Details: I really love this website, but I really hate the whole idea of the waifu thing, it is misogynous and I feel like unprofessional.* - Libre, privacy respecting and highly customizable home launcher. *Details: I know there are a ton of home launchers for Android, but most of them focus on minimalism or simplicity, I don't want that, I want a super customizable full of features application that can let me do almost anything. The closest to this was [Lawnchair](https://github.com/LawnchairLauncher/Lawnchair) which is dead, luckily [Omega](https://github.com/otakuhqz/Omega) launcher exists now and it looks like it'll be able to achieve this, but it's not there yet.* - Revive [AquaDroid](https://github.com/z3r0c00l-2k/AquaDroid) *Details: It is a really beautiful application but it has some bugs, not so many features and development has halted.*
