Hello everyone,

I’m considering starting a Lemmy instance and am looking at domain names. Any tips on where to buy? I was told to avoid GoDaddy and I’d rather not give Google my money.

I’ve read that Namecheap has a good name in the USA. Gandi in France is pretty okay in my opinion. Nowadays you do not have to worry so much about public whois info leaking to spammers (quite horrible how it was years ago) but I am not sure whether that is for the EU because of GDPR, or whether this change to more privacy also happened outside the EU. Greenhost is a privacy friendly provider which offered extra privacy options for that years ago and probably still do.

I know this is for domains and not their hosting services but man they got work to do if they wanna be “truly” green. The fundamentals principles of ANY green endeavors is to reduce waste as much as possible, forcing you to buy more RAM for more CPU vCores and being capped at 200GB of disk space isn’t the way to go green.

I rather still use LunaNode and make my impacts there as they actually focus on reducing wastes and your bill in the process. Don’t need a VM but wanna save the IP and contents? Shelve it. Don’t need it anymore? Delete it. Need some CPU here and there or even on a regular basis? You can use your “CPU Points” and even buy yourself out of any throttling if you like.

Thus I feels like LunaNode is the way to go IF you know how to take full advantage of their systems through their panel and/or API. Than just calling VMs green because they are ran off of turbines.

Beside If you book it through Toronto, you can be reasonably assured a good hunk of power will be green to boot. :)

I ended up going with NameCheap. Snagged 2 domains that I wanted for a total of around $99.

I’ve used https://njal.la/. They ‘buy it for you’ so that you don’t leak any personal information. You can pay with crypto. You can claim the domain whenever you want to, so that it properly becomes yours and not theirs.

Maybe go with namecheap or porkbun if you want a purely cheap domain

What’s wrong with GoDaddy? Genuinely want to know because I’m currently using them and obviously don’t want to keep using them if they’re really atrocious.

I just read that their UX for domain owners is lacking and that their customer service was kinda shitty.
